' My Novels!' — Pain-Free Ways

Years back I was chatting with an acquaintance, and she called a weekly meeting she attended with no naming it. I asked her what it was.

“Overreaders Anonymous,” she said.

I froze. I had no idea there was such a 12-step set, but when anybody had been an overreader, I knew I had been. And then my auditory memory caught up with my fervid imagination, and that I understood that she had really stated, “Overeaters,” and that I stopped breathing.

Now I openly admit: Reading is my drug of choice, and that I know I’m in good company. For a number people, a home isn’t a home without masses of books.

Ahead of our home fire, our household library included thousands of books. And this was with continual donations and a comprehensive going-over throughout our housewide decluttering. Today I can see that I held onto books I did not adore for one or more of these reasons:
Sentimentality. I owned three copies of Pride and Prejudice alone, because one was the first volume I had read, yet another was a portion of a set and one was a gift. Cost. When I had paid full price for a hardcover, there were times I’d hold onto it when I knew I was never going to see it again. It had been a part of a set. If you’re a book collector, then you know exactly what I’m speaking about. This was a gift. Did I think guests would be doing an inventory of my shelves? Pretty cover. That I may not have judged the book by it, but this could have been the reason why I kept it in my plate. Having it in my plate made me seem smart. It is embarrassing but true.

If you browse my ideabook 4 Obstacles into Decluttering — and How to Beat Them, you may recognize a crossover in the explanations. As I decluttered my entire home, I became very ruthless in what I have rid of to achieve my aim of, for the most part, getting down to food, clothing and books. However, I completely overlooked the fact that I needed to extend this ruthlessness into the books themselves.

When the carpenter was constructing the bookcases that now flank the living room fireplace in the new home, he asked me, “Are you really going to have the ability to fill these?” All told we had been looking at about 40 linear feet. Less than a year after our fire — even under the new regime of restraint and minimalism — our books already numbered in the hundreds. “I don’t think that is likely to be a issue,” I stated. And I still have space. Of course, my kids all have bookcases in their bedrooms, plus I have a little one in the entry to ours and also a large one in the analysis, but in the living area I still have room to spare!

I’m a book reviewer, the friend of many authors and a dedicated novel purchaser, thus there’s a constant stream of books to the home, but that is what I ask myself to find some of them back out:
Do I love it? Will I see it again? That’s it. Those two questions have allowed me to keep from holding onto more books than I care to keep and also leave room for those I still want to substitute. I’m having fun fixing my library slowly as I recall the books that I miss and would like to read it again.

Some Housekeeping Tips for Books

Pull all the books to the edge of this shelf. This very simple thing makes a massive impact. Do not be concerned about the varying sizes of these books; pack them tightly and pull them ahead, and they will look good even when your shelves aren’t as amazing as these.

There is no need to conceal your paperbacks. Notice the way the homeowner pulled them into the front of one of the shelves and piled them horizontally.

Do not forget to dust. At least once each month I provide the shirts and edges of the shelves and books a quick going-over with a feather duster, and also the difference in the room can be felt.

If your library is sizable, don’t attempt to design your shelves but allow the books to choose first place. Even if your plate distance surpasses your collection (lucky you!) Put different things on the shelves to allow the eye to rest.

Here the books aren’t rigidly put, but as there are only books, the feeling isn’t cluttered — it is only relaxed, which is perfectly suited to this particular weekend retreat.

If your home does not have built-in bookcases, then you may make attractive shelves relatively inexpensively with timber planks and easy brackets.

As always, you’re the boss of you personally; only you are able to choose the line between enough and too much.
