Decorating With Brown and Navy

As an earthy color, brown complements almost every other color, but it makes a particularly pleasing mixture when used with blue. You can use navy and brown to create a complex color scheme, as darker hues add richness and texture to your room.

Masculine Style

Brown and navy are robust colors which often appeal to men. These colours in a bedroom or home office can give the space a masculine feel, especially when used on furniture and walls. Consider furniture in dark brown leather or natural wood and consider textiles such as bedding, curtains, accent cushions or area rugs in navy. Furniture with navy upholstery, hardwood floors and wood paneling on walls also present appealing options for a man cave. Finish the color palette with different neutrals of grey, white or dark and dark or muted shades of green.

A Complementary Accent

Introduce orange to a brown and navy color scheme. Orange and blue are complementary colours, but use the same tone or intensity of every shade to get a harmonious pairing. Burnt orange or pumpkin contrasts nicely with navy. Orange also adds an extra touch of heat to the room and is at precisely the same color family as brownish. Use it as an accent color, such as burnt orange pillows on a navy sofa, an orange ceramic vase onto a navy dresser or a framed photograph with a fiery sunset hung onto a navy-colored wall.

Monochromatic Options

Use varying shades of the brown and navy for a satisfying, uncomplicated color scheme. Beige or light blue walls make a pleasing background for navy curtains. Utilize a combination of light tan and blue accent cushions on a navy couch or a navy comforter. Look for an area rug with colours of beige, brown and dark blue. Accent a room with dark wood furniture and navy upholstery using blue-and-white ceramic and beige carpeting or area rugs to help lighten the space.

Natural Comfort

As natural earth tones combine blue and brown with other natural, earthy colors for a cozy, relaxed atmosphere. Go for a beach feel in a bedroom with light blue walls, matchstick blinds, a paddle-wheel ceiling fan, sisal area rug and an armchair with navy and white-striped upholstery. Include a dark wood bed frame using bedding in hues of cream, beige and mocha. Fill out a living room using natural texture like navy grass-cloth wallpaper, bamboo blinds, sea-grass chairs and chocolate brown leather upholstery.
