Correcting Deck Stain Color

When you apply a semi-transparent stain for a wood deck, the outcome might look somewhat different than the color on the tag. After the pigments in the stain blend with the existing colour in the wood, you may get a color substantially darker, browner or redder than you ever predicted. You can correct the colour either by topping the deck with a different type of stain, or by bleaching the existing stain off and trying another colored stain.

Solid Color Stains

The fastest and easiest way to repair your deck’s color is by applying a solid color stain. These kinds of exterior stains provide a totally predictable and uniform color over the whole deck. Solid stains hide the normal color variations of this wood’s grains and veins, while highlighting that the wood’s natural texture.

Wood Bleach

As an alternative, you can apply one of several varieties of deck strippers or bleaches for your miscolored deck. First, analyze the stripping product on a small area to test it for efficacy. Then use the deck stripper or bleach to the whole deck according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Rinse the deck thoroughly with a pressure washer or garden hose, and allow the surface to dry fully. Follow up by studying a different semi-transparent stain on a small area of your deck. When you attain the color you want, apply it to the whole deck.
