10 Vintage Touches for Your Toilet

Are you seeking to keep your toilet from appearing like a cookie cutter replica of every other one you see? Try adding some flair.

All it takes is one element. You don’t need the full-on T.G.I.-Friday’s pull-chain toilet and old-newspaper background to go classic. (As a 12-year-old, however, the pull-chain has been my favourite thing about that combined besides the potato skins. Actually I am thinking it was Wendy’s that had the older newspaper printed stalls. Whatever.)

Select and use as many of these as you’d like. It all depends on just how classic you want to go.

1. Color palette. Black, white and mild mint-green tiles are a nostalgic option filled with charm. They have a look that is updated Even though vintage-inspired.

2. Claw-foot tub. Although some lovely new versions are on the market nowadays, superior scavengers can locate the originals the newest versions emulate. Check architectural salvage yards and shops for classic claw-foot tubs. You can then send them into the glazer to get them fixed up good as new.

Classic sinks fall under this class too. Pedestal and wall-mount sinks also can be refurbished to add classic appeal to your toilet. Fixture designers are searching back and replicating the styles for new versions.

3. Vanity. Repurpose a bureau, washstand, cabinet or other classic piece into a dressing table. I love this piece as it shows some age, but its dark color and lack of chipped paint give it an updated look.

Hint: Check the height. Standard height is roughly 29 to 36 inches. You’ll want to go toward the low end of the range if the toilet is going to be used by kids.

4. Antique mirror. Maybe that should read”Antiqued Mirror.” The lovely edges about that mirror give it an elegantly aged look. For a more cottage-like look, check out a mirror that’s made from reclaimed wood.

5. Vintage towel stand. I have a special spot in my heart because of this, as my mom and grandmother always had rickety wooden towel racks around.

They are a great solution for a house where a lot of people share a toilet. In a coastal cabin it’s typical for towel racks to be in the bedrooms. That allows all towels a shot at drying and prevents them from getting mixed up in the restroom.

6. Vintage door. Whether you use it as the main doorway, a cupboard door or propped against the wall as a giant chalkboard, a piece like this adds unique style to your room.

7. Barn lighting. While those sconces are new, they have a classic barn look. They also pick up on the galvanized tin bucket underneath the dressing table.

9. Vintage signs, botanical prints, portraits, postcards, silhouettes or photos. You aren’t confined to this particular list, but it should give you a good notion of the kind of decoration that adds classic charm. One piece on the wall can really pack a classic punch, like this entertaining”No Vacancy” sign.

10. Small particulars. Do not overlook little design opportunities, like these glass doorknobs. The same rule applies to cabinet hardware, shower curtain rings, the”Hot” and”Cold” atop your faucets and more. Focus your eyes on the little things for opportunities to incorporate your individual style.
