Kitchen of the Week: Bright Mid-Century Remodel

Sleek materials along with a streamlined design transformed the kitchen in this 1950s bungalow to a supreme contemporary kitchen with mid-century modern flair. While the kitchen’s structure didn’t change much throughout the renovation, owners Kirby and Ryan Weiland wanted more room to cook along with also a space which felt bright and open and had plenty of storage.

The inspiration for this kitchen primarily came from Kirby and Ryan’s love of mid-century-modern style, which permeates the rest of this home in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Because the kitchen is this open space, they wanted it to combine with the living and dining rooms. “Everything happened for us,” says Kirby. “We loved picking out materials and colors”

There had been a wall between the kitchen and the living room which entirely blocked the view of the lake and the valley. Kirby and Ryan took down the wall; and the view is totally accessible.

Taking away the wall itself wasn’t that hard, but it did end up introducing some challenges because the south west wall was windows. This made the installation of any upper chimney hopeless. Kirby and Ryan skipped the overhead cabinets and proceeded with big cabinets and drawers, making lots of space for all of their plates and glasses. The kitchen also has a cupboard.

Though the galley design of the kitchen pretty much remained the same, Kirby and Ryan added lots of space whilst remodeling. The 3′ x 12′ kitchen island is Kirby’s favorite part of the kitchen it provides lots of homework room and sufficient space for an eat-in bar.

The ceiling lights to your kitchen also were kept minimum, and a skylight adds a little natural light.
