Cooking With Colour: When to Utilize Orange in the Kitchen

Similar to its reddish neighbor on the color wheel, orange is a attention-grabbing colour that stimulates the desire and also skin care skin tones. It is an excellent kitchen color choice for anyone living in cooler climates, because of its warmth. But working together with orange can be challenging, too — mild shades have a tendency to read as light hearted and peachy. Those tones are fine for a nursery or kids’ room, but in a kitchen that I have a tendency to favor bold bursts of pumpkin, carrot and tangerine. Just a little bit of those high-energy hues goes a very long way and will make a room look occupied, so they tend to work best in noncluttered, minimalist kitchens.

Below you’ll see some of my preferred oranges for kitchens and examples of how you can use this color in your home.

If you would like to use orange in your kitchen but are not loving the bright orange hues touted here, consider searching for light orange colors that have some yellow or brownish in them — they will have a mellow vibe without appearing too light.

Some of my preferred oranges (clockwise from top left):

1. Length of Wheat 095-4, from Mythic Paint
2. Sweet Orange 2017-40 out of Benjamin Moore
3. Tangerine Dream 123-7, from Pittsburgh Paints
4. Sunbaked Orange GLO08, from Glidden
5. Baby Carrot 8-11, from Pratt & Lambert
6. Fall Blaze 2002-1A, from Valspar
7. Montana Dust AC212-5, from Kelly-Moore
8. Cayenne SW6881, from Sherwin-Williams

This is a vibrant shade of pure orange, but because it’s not the main color in the kitchen and also the rest of the palette is neutral and light, it draws your eye to the interesting customized cabinetry and shelving.

That’s not to mention that orange can’t be paired with different colors. Blue is a fantastic choice, because it’s reverse from orange on the color wheel. The two colors offer you the maximum contrast to each other, so they make a bold, high-energy combo. When working together with complementary colors, I love to create the bolder colour and let the other function as a lighter, backdrop color. The extreme carrot color here seems excellent against the sky blue island in this kitchen.

A bold orange accent hue is a excellent way to tie various wood tones collectively. These forests have some orange in them, which has picked up by the vibrant orange backsplash, tile and accent wall color. By turning up the volume on the orange hue utilized here, it actually stands out while still working in harmony with the timber. The result is rich and warm — perfect for a house in a colder weather.

Here’s another fantastic bright orange backsplash. The rest of the palette within this kitchen is light, clean and neutral, with lots of white and stainless steel, so the red-orange backsplash and fridge actually stick out.

One more beautiful attention-getting orange backsplash — this one has a more traditional feel as a result of handmade quality of the backsplash tiles out of Waterworks.

I really like the way the bit of orange delineates this tasteful kitchen at the open-plan space.

Gray is still a favorite neutral, and it serves as a wonderful trendy contrast to the fiery orange hue within this beautiful contemporary kitchen.

If you are drawn to orange but are somewhat leery about committing to orange cabinetry, backsplash tiles or drapes, think about utilizing the hue in a way that are comparatively inexpensive to change later on, like painted accent regions at the kitchen. I adore this papaya orange, but it would be very simple to repaint the walls.

Or you can try using an eye-popping orange for kitchen furniture and accessories. This airy white kitchen can host any accent color. Simply stick to one or two of your preferred bolder hues in a kitchen like this, so it doesn’t get too busy.
