Hardwood flooring finishes are tough, but they can turn cloudy when you clean with the incorrect chemicals, so producers recommend using gentle, pH-neutral cleaners. A combination of mild soap and water does not always get all the stains out, particularly the white ones left by tough or salty water. A vinegar solution can take care of these stains, and inserting isopropyl alcohol increases the evaporation rate and reduces the risk of water damage. Alcohol also removes some stains which vinegar can’t, like those caused by pigments or juice spills. Pure alcohol can harm a floor finish, but it’s protected in water alternatives.
Pour a cup of water to a 1-quart container, then mix in 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of isopropyl, or alcohol. If you would like to make a larger or smaller stack, simply combine these three components in equal proportions.
Add three or four drops of mild dish detergent to 3 cups of cleaning option. Don’t use detergent which has moisturizers or oxygen bleach — it will leave streaks on the floor.
Give your cleaning alternative a scent by adding 5 to 10 drops of essential oil per quart of solution. Use only pure oils — not chemical oils consisting of fragrance added to vegetable oil.
Apply the cleaner with a mop — in case you made a large batch — or using a spray bottle. Spread it thin with a microfiber mop, being certain not to form puddles or leave any of the solution standing around the floor.
