The way to Fix Dead Grass By Fertilizer

An appropriate lawn maintenance routine typically includes practices like mowing grass at the appropriate height, providing the turf with supplementary water and, when necessary, applying fertilizer. Proper fertilizer use encourages healthy, vigorous grass growth and development. But if you apply fertilizer badly, fail to spread it evenly, over-fertilize or accidentally spill the material, affected turf areas will likely develop “fertilizer burn,” with patches of or streaks of discolored grass which may die if the excess incisions in the fertilizer aren’t washed off or leached out quickly.

Assessing the Damage

Water the dead-looking area of grass thoroughly and intensely as soon as possible. This can wash fertilizer off of the grass blades and leach the excess salts out of the grass root zone. Wait a couple of weeks to see whether the grass recovers, greening up or producing new growth.

Rake the dead grass blades out using a lawn rake a few weeks after you leach out the fertilizer.

Inspect the grass carefully to evaluate the extent of the damage. If fresh grass is growing from the space, then you do not need to do anything else, apart from take care of the lawn. If the dead grass is contained to few tiny spots, you can simply “stain” each spot. If the entire lawn is damaged, you’ll need to overseed it.

Patching Small Sections of Turf

Dig up the wounded section or sections of turf. Eliminate the turf and dirt in a room 2 inches deep which extends 6 inches beyond the dead spot.

Work the soil with a lawn rake, removing any remaining roots or other debris, like rocks. Insert quality topsoil, if needed, to produce the area level with surrounding land, firm it down gently and water it thoroughly to allow it to settle.

Spread seed over the bare, prepared soil having a species and cultivar that matches the surrounding turf. Rake the seed gently to cover it with as much as 1/8 inch of dirt, firm it down gently, cover it with a very thin layer of mulch and water it gently and frequently until it germinates. As an alternative, you can patch the website by placing sod or planting sprigs or stolons.

Overseeding Large Damaged Areas

Mow the lawn at a very low elevation and rake up the grass clippings.

Dethatch and aerate the lawn in case you haven’t performed these tasks recently or the lawn includes a thick thatch layer of thatch or is quite compacted.

Broadcast bud seed of the desired cultivar evenly over the area at the speed recommended for your grass cultivar, rake it in softly and gently firm the area down. Water the overseeded area gently and frequently until the seeds germinate.
