DIY: Basket-Shade Pendant Light

It’s no fun to fall in love with a product and then be disappointed after looking at the purchase price tag. Ashley Campbell, photographer and writer behind supporting the Sycamore, had this experience with a pair of adorable cage pendants at an upscale shop. Since she couldn’t justify the price tag, and the lights had been smaller than she liked, she left one of her own.

Initially, Campbell tried making her very own basket with wire, but the process became a complete wreck. After a couple of attempts, she recalled that her daughter had a black wire basket full of toys in her room. It was the best answer.

Here is a shot of the basket in its prior life as a container for toys.

For this particular DIY, you’ll need: Spray paint (she used a horizontal spray paint)Metal outlet cover (to link the pendant)Mini pendant lightMetal basketWire cutterStrong adhesive (like Liquid Nails)

1. Cut off any basket manages or other extra decorative bits with a wire cutter. Also cut out the base middle wire of the basket — this is where you’ll put the socket cover.

2. Spray paint the basket and socket cover.

3. Glue the socket cover to the base inside of the basket. Campbell used Liquid Nails, but you might try out any other super-strong adhesive. Campbell was smart enough to put this on the interior of the basket, so the glue is not actually used for strength, it’s more for keeping the basket and cover together.

4. Twist the basket to allow the glue dry. Place a weight (for example, a book) along with the socket cover so that it stays secure while the adhesive dries.

5. Spray paint everything one more time and let dry.

6. Attach your basket by sandwiching it between the bulb and the socket cover on the mini pendant.
