An Autumn Sedum the best way to Prune

Colourful flowers all-too frequently depart, when fall arrives in the backyard. Showy pink to coppery blooms of autumn sedum (Sedum spectabile) cultivars including “Autumn Joy” and “Autumn Fire” offer dependable drop colour for Sunset’s Environment Zones 1 to 2-3 from late summer into early winter. Pruning plant stems extends flowering more in to drop and increases general bushiness and flower stalk power. Bronze -y seed heads and aged flowers to winter- crops that are dormant or abandon them to feed birds.

Basic Pruning

As it emerges in the spring, inspect the new development. Perform preliminary pruning when stems are 8″ tall.

Spot the shears in a container and unlock reducing surfaces to be exposed by the pruning shears, pointed ends down.

Pour hydrogen peroxide the blades on to disinfect them. Allow extra hydrogen peroxide.

Cut weaker stems entirely to the floor to start the plant and encourage development that is stronger.

Cut off 3 to 4 inches in the very best growth of remaining stems. This encourages stems to thicken, avoiding floppiness when the broad, large flowers open in the fall.

If preferred, retain cuttings to root them for crops. Otherwise, discard or compost them.

Optional Prunings
