Katlanier turned a dark Spanish-style kitchen into this bright, open farmhouse-style kitchen on a tight budget. She designed the space herself, replacing only some of the chimney and keeping all her original appliances but for the counter tops.

3. New Conventional in Montreal
After gutting the kitchen from her Montreal, Quebec, home fully, er mlalani got to work discovering new ceiling-height cabinets, light and Thermador appliances. A massive island which comfortably seats six today occupies the space where she had a kitchen table.
Two complementary colors give the kitchen a few depth: Gettysburg Gray on the perimeter and Bittersweet Chocolate on the island, the two from Benjamin Moore. Dark walnut butcher block the island makes for easy prep work, while quartz shirts the perimeter counters.

Tracy Hansen’s old kitchen had a fantastic layout, but it had an update. To stay in line with the house’s original Crafstman design, she had the kitchen gutted and rebuilt with the specific same layout. Working together with Rose City Construction in Pasadena, she had classic tiled countertops, subway tile and an African mahogany island shirt installed.
The new kitchen has today’s modern conveniences in a conventional layout with classic substances. The stained glass Roycroft kitchen doorway, which Hansen made, is the perfect finishing touch.
